About the product

This power point is aimed at KS4/5 students. It examines the causes, effects and the human response to a one in a hundred year event. The September 2008 Morpeth flood made national headlines and showed how despite some level of protection, the town suffered severe economic, social and environmental impacts that have left many questions to be answered.

Using many original visual images recorded at the time of the event, it shows clearly the scale of the flood and its impact on local people and businesses. Students are encouraged to build up a detailed knowledge and understanding of reasons why rivers flood, the consequences of floods and the future implications for planners in a real place context. Key questions are set which allow students to think about the wider issues of flood protection and flood alleviation.

Teachers can adapt the power point by selecting key slides to build up a visual time frame of the event. For example, changing the order of the slides and asking students to sequence them with their own commentary.
